Discover Chan Chan

Walking into Chan Chan for the first time felt like stepping into a neighborhood spot that locals quietly guard. The space is casual and unpretentious, the kind of diner-style Korean restaurant where conversations bounce between tables and the aroma of simmering broths does half the talking. Located at 14250 Culver Dr, Irvine, CA 92604, United States, it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but once you know it’s there, it becomes part of your regular rotation.

The menu covers a familiar range of Korean comfort dishes, but each item feels dialed in. There’s a clear focus on soups, stews, and rice-based plates, supported by a lineup of banchan that changes slightly depending on availability. One visit, the kimchi leaned bright and crisp; another time it was deeper and funkier. That variation isn’t inconsistency-it’s fermentation doing its thing. Studies referenced by the National Institutes of Health have shown fermented foods like kimchi support gut health through beneficial bacteria, and you can taste that living quality in every bite.

A standout moment for me was bringing a friend who’d never tried Korean food beyond barbecue. We ordered galbitang and dumplings to share, and I watched her go from cautious sips to confidently lifting the bowl for the last spoonful. She later told me the meal felt comfort food without being heavy, which sums up the kitchen’s approach well. The flavors are clean, layered, and satisfying without overwhelming your palate.

Service here plays a big role in the overall experience. The staff doesn’t rush you, and questions about the menu are met with genuine explanations instead of rehearsed lines. On one visit, I asked why so many regulars seemed to order the same dish. The server explained that some recipes have stayed unchanged for years because regular customers expect that exact flavor. That kind of consistency builds trust, and it shows why reviews often mention reliability as much as taste.

From an industry perspective, restaurants like this succeed by doing fewer things well rather than chasing trends. The focus on soups and stews aligns with traditional Korean dining patterns, where meals are built around shared warmth and balance. Culinary historians from organizations like the Smithsonian have noted that these dishes evolved not just for flavor but for nourishment and sustainability, something that still resonates today.

While the location is convenient for anyone around Irvine, it can get busy during peak hours, and parking may require a little patience. That’s probably the only real limitation. The dining room isn’t designed for lingering brunch-style hangouts, but for a satisfying meal that feels honest and well-executed, that tradeoff feels fair.

Regulars often talk about this place in a low-key way, saying things like this is where I come when I just want good food. That sentiment captures the heart of the experience. Between the carefully prepared menu, steady service, and loyal local following, this diner-style spot earns its reputation one bowl at a time.

  • My son and I visited Chan Chan for the first time. First off, we ordered too much food. We ordered 3 dishes and took more than half of it home. We had the Chan Chan chicken tenders. Just wonderful. The sauce was just right and the chicken was perfect. Then we had the Kimchi Rice Cake (bowl). It was spicy but we kept on eating it. And then we had the beef Kimbap which was a great combination of tastes. I look forward to the leftovers!

  • Chan Chan is casual but clean, and "the spot" without being too loud. The environment is comfortable and perfect for casual groups and dates as well; it's a place where you can hear conversations easily but still feel a little that comfortable distance from other tables. The playlist and lighting hit a cozy middle ground, as it feels warm and just very "vibey" without being too empty or fighting for space. They have those lamps on each table that really brings the vibes up a notch, too. Service was great! Although they appeared short-staffed, they really made sure to go around to each table and accommodate all the diners. The staff greeted us warmly, checked in often, and offered thoughtful recommendations. Parking is free since it's within a plaza, but during busy times, it might get packed. However, I'm sure you can find a spot, if you don't mind walking a bit. As for food, we orderd both the Rosé tteokbokki with rice ddeok and the original fried chicken wings. This tteokbokki was a perfect balance between creamy and savory, especially with their bits of sausage and bacon in the mix. The sauce was creamy with a faint sweetness and a savory tang that coated the rice cakes perfectly. The rice ddeok were pillowy and chewy, soaking up the sauce so that each bite had a lingering spiciness that wasn't too overpowering. It felt both nostalgic and new. As for the fried chicken, it was definitely something unique. Each piece arrived with a golden, crisp batter that burst with flavor as you bit into it. It had an airy crunch without much greasy, and the inside was a tender, juicy meat. The sauce had whispers of garlic and pepper, and a hint of sweetness that we asked for on the side. It was the perfect complement to the juicy chicken. I would love to come back to try the other dishes. A++

  • This is one of the few places I always come back to. I remember getting loads of takeout from Chan Chan during covid, or if it was just a treat myself day, or had a bad day at work. Their Korean comfort food like Korean fried chicken and kimbap is basically an Irvine staple, with this year marking 10 years they've been open, and their inside dining just got a long overdue remodel. You've gotta try some of their new items like cheesy pork belly with shishito peppers and the GIANT basket of fried goodies. There's onion rings, fried squid, seaweed dumplings, and more in it. And this is where you'll find the best Korean fried chicken in the GAME. Super crunchy batter, sauces are to d!e for, and MEATY pieces of chicken. And you can't forget about the tteokbokki or soondae which is rice sausage. I got the rose flavor this time and it was perfectly creamy with a tiny bit of spice. And I always look forward to this Korean dessert. It's called sikhye, and it's a sweet rice drink in slush form. SO refreshing and addicting. Thanks for reading! ^-^

  • Try veggie sushi roll please! Squid mochi cake is delicious but thirsty afterwards. Don’t go with fried wings, instead order fried tenders! Too much flour skin for the wings, and less meat. Tender tastes still good on second day.

  • Great selection of different dishes. Good tasting food. Good portion size to price ratio. It would be beneficial if the menu had descriptions though 2nd visit: Great service. They gave us a basket of fries on the house. The large fried chicken basket is expensive but huge. Easily enough for two or three people Further visits: The kimbap is dry and hard to eat because the rolls are so big. We don’t order it anymore. The kimchi spam fried rice and the rose pasta are both stand out items.

  • In Korean, the word “bunsik” (분식) is an umbrella term for Korean comfort food—think all your favorites from tteokbokki to Korean fried chicken. Chan Chan is one of our go-to spots for bunsik in Orange County for their cozy atmosphere and insanely good food + big portions! We ordered their retro rice came, which is a hot, bubbling tteokbokki stew cooked right in front of you. It is filled to the brim with two types of noodles, fishcake, ricecake, and dumplings. Also, the kimchi spam fried rice was SUPER flavorful—we always get this! Lastly, the fried chicken here simply can’t be skipped. They do a garlic crunch for their wings, which adds a nice crispy and tasty touch. Overall, 10/10 experience and would highly recommend for groups of all sizes!

  • I came here with friends for a high school reunion! Service was so kind, immediate, and direct. We came on a Sunday morning, around 11 am just when the restaurant opened. There aren’t many people around this time, so if you are looking for a place to grab brunch - this place is wonderful! For a party of four we ordered the Bunsik Combo: Grilled Beef Kimbap, spicy beef noodles, and rose pasta It satisfied the taste palates reflecting the spectrum of those who do not like spice and those who did. The food was savory and fresh. There were pickled radishes and kimchi to accompany the main dishes. The size of the kimbaps were generous compared to the ones you would get from a Korean convenience store or supermarket. The spicy beef noodles was not greasy and instead warm to the soul. I think there was a good balance of noodles, meat, and vegetables that I really appreciated. I’m so much more used to there being too much noodles - as much as I like noodles, it is not what I would pay for compared to the balance of flavors. The rose pasta was topped with corn that hugged my taste palates. Creamy and delicious - reminding me of Alfredo pasta with a lingering touch of Korean tteobokki. The small details that enhanced our time here - the garnishes, the glass cups for the water, and the care provided by the staff. We did not feel rushed at all, and it was such a blessing to just dine with friends here! Thank you all so much.

  • We went for the first time last weekend, for an early Sunday evening dinner. I never really noticed them before until my new favorite cuisine Korean food - became a thing lol! It was 4:30pm and quiet with only a few other patrons. We picked our own table. Apparently, they had recently renovated. It was pretty cute in there but the round tables felt a bit small for two. The young man tending to the dining room brought two very small stainless steel cups and our own carafe of cold water. We ordered 16 pc Fried Chicken and chose two sauces on the side: Chan Chan sauce and Sweet Garlic. We didn't want it mixed in because we wanted to control the sauce and didn't know if the crunchy coating would get soggy. I also ordered a "must try" off their Kimbap menu called Chan Chan and I will say - you also MUST TRY it! It's the best kimbap we've ever had! The ingredients were so fresh and the fish cake yummy - and you know it was made fresh because it came after the fried chicken was delivered. The Chan Chan Kimbap is also very photogenic because of it's presentation and bright colors! Anyway, once the tray of 16 fried little chickies came, we both looked at each other and laughed because it was SO much food for us two little Asian foodies. We were so glad we also got the sauces on the side. The chicken was moist and the sauces were delicious. The breading was very crispy but very much overly battered. We should have only ordered the 8-pc because between the two of us, we only polished off 7. The other 11-pcs crisped up wonderfully days later in our Ninja air fryer though! If I have to find one more thing they can improve upon (besides small tables intended for two), I would say their paper napkins are small and thin and we initially were only given like 3 each - you need at least 6 each minimum lol - or those little individual wet wipes would have been a nice touch post-meal. Would we come back? YES! I may not be a Korean food connoisseur yet but I will for sure order their Chan Chan Kimbap again and try some of their other popular items. Thanks for reading, fellow foodies!
